Is 150,000 km Too Much for a Used Car? A Calgary Buyer’s Guide

You find a used vehicle with the features you want, a price that fits your budget, and an odometer reading of 150,000 kilometres. Should you keep looking?

The kilometres deserve attention, but they cannot tell you everything about the vehicle. A useful comparison also considers its age, maintenance history, current condition, and what it may need next.

Start with the maintenance history

Ask for available service records. Look for evidence that scheduled maintenance was completed, and compare those records with the manufacturer’s requirements for the exact engine and drivetrain.

A recent oil change is helpful, but it does not answer every maintenance question. Depending on the vehicle, transmission servicing, cooling-system maintenance, spark plugs, or timing-belt replacement may also matter.

CARFAX Canada identifies service-history information as an important part of evaluating a used vehicle. Available records can help you understand how it has been maintained.

Find out what needs attention next

Two vehicles with similar kilometres can have very different immediate costs.

One might have recently replaced tires and brakes. Another could be approaching both expenses. Ask about tire condition, brake measurements, leaks, suspension wear, and any recommended repairs.

An independent pre-purchase inspection can help turn those questions into useful information before you commit.

Compare the complete purchase

Imagine two similar SUVs. One has fewer kilometres but needs tires and several repairs. The other has higher kilometres, documented maintenance, and fewer immediate needs.

The lower odometer reading does not automatically make the first SUV the better purchase. Compare the asking price alongside the inspection findings and expected maintenance.

Think about your own driving

Your intended use matters. Someone driving a short local route has different needs from someone covering long distances every week. Consider how long you plan to keep the vehicle and the kilometres you expect to add.

There is no universal mileage number that guarantees reliability or signals the end of a vehicle’s useful life.
