Car Financing for Newcomers to Canada: A Calgary Guide

Car Financing for Newcomers in Calgary

Moving to Calgary can involve a long list of firsts. A new home. A new job. A new banking system. A new credit system. And for many newcomers, reliable transportation quickly becomes another priority.

Calgary is a large city, and depending on where you live and work, owning a vehicle can make commuting, groceries, appointments and family life considerably easier. But what happens when you need a vehicle before you've had years to establish Canadian credit?

Can Newcomers Finance a Vehicle in Canada?

Newcomers may be able to obtain vehicle financing, but approvals are never automatic. A limited Canadian credit history can affect an application because lenders have less local borrowing history to review.

However, lenders may consider additional factors when determining whether financing can be offered and on what terms. The result depends on the applicant, lender, vehicle and overall application.

Start With a Realistic Vehicle Budget

Before deciding which vehicle you want, decide what you can comfortably afford. Consider more than the finance payment. Your transportation budget may also include: insurance, fuel, maintenance, winter tires, parking and registration.

This is particularly important when you're newly established in Canada and may still be adjusting to other household expenses. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada recommends reviewing your budget before borrowing and understanding what you can realistically repay.

Understand the Difference Between Price and Payment

A vehicle can have a manageable monthly or bi-weekly payment while still being expensive overall. Longer financing terms can lower the regular payment but increase the total interest paid.

Canada's Financial Consumer Agency recommends comparing the total cost of the vehicle and loan—not simply focusing on the regular payment. When reviewing a financing proposal, look at:

  • Vehicle Price
  • Down Payment
  • Amount Financed
  • APR
  • Loan Term
  • Payment Frequency
  • Total Cost of Borrowing

What Information Might a Lender Request?

Requirements vary by lender. A financing application commonly requires personal identification and information related to residence, employment and income. Additional documentation may be requested depending on the lender and your particular situation.

Rather than trying to guess exactly what you'll need, speak with the financing team and ask what documents apply to your application.

What If I Have Little or No Canadian Credit History?

Limited credit history is different from having a long history of missed payments. Someone who recently arrived in Canada may simply not have had enough time to establish substantial Canadian credit information.

That is why it's useful to explain your situation accurately on the application. Do not provide inaccurate employment, income or residence information in an attempt to strengthen an application.

Should You Make a Down Payment?

If financially practical, a down payment reduces the amount you need to borrow. That can lower the size of the loan and potentially reduce total borrowing costs.

However, you should not empty all of your savings just to make a larger down payment. Newcomers may also need emergency savings for housing, moving costs and other expenses. Choose an amount that makes sense for your overall financial situation.

Choose the Vehicle Carefully

It's easy to focus on approval first and vehicle second. That can be a mistake. The goal isn't simply: “Can I get approved?” The better question is: “Can I get a suitable vehicle with financing that fits my budget?”

Look for a vehicle that meets your real needs. If you're commuting mostly within Calgary, you might prioritize fuel economy and affordability. If you have a larger family, passenger and cargo capacity may matter more. If you're concerned about Calgary winters, you may prioritize AWD, heated seats, remote start and appropriate winter tires.

Understand Calgary Winter Driving

Newcomers who haven't previously driven in Canadian winters should give winter preparation extra attention. Transport Canada recommends winter tires on all wheels for driving in cold, snowy and icy conditions, and Alberta recommends winterizing important systems such as tires, battery, heater, brakes and defroster.

An AWD vehicle can be useful, but safe winter driving still depends heavily on appropriate tires, speed and following distance.

Compare Financing Before You Commit

Ask questions. Understand the interest rate. Understand the length of the loan. Understand whether there are optional products included. Understand the total cost. And read the agreement before signing.

Official Canadian consumer guidance recommends comparing financing options and reviewing disclosure information before completing a vehicle loan.
