A CARFAX Claim Does Not Tell the Whole Story: What Calgary Buyers Should Check

A used vehicle catches your attention, but its history report includes a claim. Does that mean you should cross it off your list?

Start by understanding the record. A claim is a reason to ask more questions—not enough information on its own to judge the entire vehicle.

Understand what was reported

Read the incident details carefully. Look for the date, reported damage area, type of incident, and whether the record describes an estimate or a claim.

Hail damage, a parking collision, and a more substantial accident raise different questions. Avoid assuming that every entry describes the same kind of damage.

Look beyond the dollar amount

A dollar figure does not explain exactly what happened or how well the vehicle was repaired. Ask what work was completed and whether repair invoices, photographs, or other documentation are available.

Useful questions include:

  • Which parts of the vehicle were affected?
  • Were any structural repairs required?
  • Was there airbag deployment?
  • Are there records of the completed repairs?
  • Does anything still need attention?

If the available documents do not answer a question, leave it unresolved until you can get better information.

Check the vehicle’s condition today

A history report describes reported events. It cannot replace a current assessment of the vehicle.

CARFAX Canada recommends using a history report together with an inspection and test drive. Give the inspecting technician the report so they can consider the recorded damage when assessing the vehicle.

Understand “no reported accidents” too

A report without accident entries means no accident or damage records were reported to CARFAX Canada when that report was generated. It is not a guarantee that the vehicle has never been damaged.

That is why the same careful approach matters whether the report contains a claim or appears clear.

Make the decision using the whole picture

Consider the available history, repair documentation, current condition, asking price, and your comfort with the findings. Avoid choosing or rejecting a vehicle based on one number.
